What a cleaning business needs from a checklist
Most cleaning checklists online are written for a homeowner doing their own chores. A cleaning business needs two more things from its list.
- Leak
It has to say which tasks belong to which clean.
Otherwise a standard visit drifts into a deep clean at the standard price.
- Leak
Someone other than the cleaner has to check it.
A list nobody checks only reminds the crew.
I run operations for a residential cleaning company with a field team of about 20. Every service type there has a written procedure and a walkthrough check behind it. This page is the room-by-room part, written as a starting point you can copy. Change the tasks to match what you sell.
Standard, deep and move-out: what changes
| Clean | When it is booked | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Recurring visits to a home that is already in good shape | Surfaces, kitchen, bathrooms, floors and trash, every visit |
| Deep | A first visit, a home that has slipped, or a seasonal reset | Detail work: baseboards, cabinet fronts, grout, blinds, vents, fans and doors |
| Move-out | An empty home before keys go back or a new tenant arrives | Everything in a deep clean, plus inside cabinets, drawers, closets, the oven and the fridge |
The room-by-room cleaning checklist
A check means the task is part of that clean. Add-on means the client asks for it and pays for it separately. Blank means the crew skips it.

How a cleaning company uses the checklist for walkthrough QA
- Attach the right list when the job is booked. Standard, deep or move-out goes on the job itself, so the crew knows the scope before they arrive.
- Check off each room as the crew finishes it. A sheet filled in at the front door tells you nothing about the bathroom.
- Walk it before the crew leaves. A lead or the owner walks the kitchen, the bathrooms and any room with a client note, using the same list.
- Photograph the kitchen, the bathrooms and anything flagged. If a client calls about a missed spot, you have the picture.
- Fix misses on the same visit. Write each one on the sheet, even when it is fixed.
- Count misses by task every week. A task missed twice goes into training, and a client who complains twice gets a walkthrough every visit for a month.

Pick the clean to see only its tasks, tick them off on a phone or tablet, or print the sheet for the crew. Every task is on it, and tags mark the ones that belong only to some cleans.

Questions
What should a cleaning checklist include?
Every room the crew cleans, broken into tasks someone can check off, with a mark for which type of clean includes each task. For a cleaning business it also needs a job line (client, date, crew, type of clean) and a walkthrough sign-off, so the list proves the job was checked by someone other than the person who cleaned.
What is the difference between a standard clean and a deep clean?
A standard clean keeps a home that is already in good shape: surfaces, kitchen, bathrooms, floors and trash. A deep clean adds the detail work a standard visit skips, like baseboards, cabinet fronts, grout, soap scum, blinds, vents and fan blades. Most companies start a new recurring client with a deep clean.
What does a move-out clean include?
Everything in a deep clean, done in an empty home, plus the insides: cabinets, drawers, closets, the oven and the fridge. Landlords and property managers check the insides first, so the move-out list is the longest of the three.
How do cleaning companies check quality?
With a walkthrough against the same checklist the crew used. A lead or the owner walks at least the kitchen, the bathrooms and any room with a note, marks what was missed and gets it fixed before the crew leaves. Counting misses by task each week shows what to retrain.
Can I use this checklist template for my cleaning business?
Yes. It is free to print and copy. Change the tasks to match what you sell and keep the walkthrough sign-off at the bottom, because that is the part that turns a list into quality control.
The procedures around the checklist
A checklist covers the work inside the home. The money leaks on the office side: the quote that never got a follow-up, the complaint nobody logged, the cancellation fee nobody charged. The cleaning business SOP template covers that side, and two of its procedures are free.
Where the checklist fits
I build AI systems and automations for growing businesses in any industry, and I work beside founders as their fractional COO. A checklist is the smallest system I build: one written standard, checked by someone other than the person who did the work.
